Brazil
Cerrado is the newest coffee region in Brazil. It was shaped by two important events. In 1975, the “black frost” devastated plantations in Parana (at the time, the largest coffee-producing region in Brazil at that time). At the same time, in western São Paulo, coffee plantations were struggling against an intense nematodes infestation. These two events brought Brazil’s coffee industry to its knees.
Farmers set out in search of new areas to develop and arrived in Cerrado — an underdeveloped area with poor, acidic soil — just as a government effort was underway to understand the science of Cerrado’s soil and whether it might someday be a major food producer. Simple, inexpensive solutions wound up being effective, and coffee plants adapted well to Cerrado’s well-defined climate. Its warm temperatures, intense sunlight and dry winters aligned perfectly with the harvest, which demands dry weather. Today, coffee is grown here in 55 towns and across 210,000 hectares.

Sidamo enjoys soil and climatic conditions-including altitude, rainfall and temperature - that make it perfect for the production of Arabica Coffee. Speciality grade coffee from Sidamo is grown mainly in small villages. Sidamo is well known for its production of "garden coffee". The coffee is planted at low density, ranging from 1000 to 1800 trees per hectare and is mostly fertilized with organic matter. All of the coffee produced under this system is agronomically organic, but most is not certified as such.

Testimonials
Newberry is North Torrance's first "third wave" roaster, an area where the only places you can find coffee are at Starbucks, Coffee Bean, and McDonald's. They import beans from around the world, utilize high quality ingredients, roast locally, and establish partnerships with small farms.

Yelp
Excellent locally roasted coffee. Their choice of single origin plus roast length is always spot on. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

I like this place because it's a local roastery and I appreciate what they do amid heavy competition from big coffee companies nearby. I came in to buy a bag of beans to try. They are knowledgeable about coffee, and when I mentioned I wanted the beans to be grinded for my moka pot, they knew exactly what I was talking about and how coarse the grind needed to be. I like how they mention the origin and type of process that is used to roast the beans, which for me is the mark of a true coffee expert.
